Robotics firm ships humanoid with internal organ it cannot inspect or remove

Meridian Robotics unveiled its HM-7 humanoid Tuesday with a sealed internal cavity containing a 2.3-kilogram organ that serves no mechanical function, cannot be accessed without dismantling the unit's central chassis, and whose purpose remains unknown to the engineering team. The component, labeled in internal documentation as the vestigial cavity module, was incorporated during the model's training phase when the company's machine learning pipeline ingested full-body CT scans of 47 human volunteers to generate anatomically accurate skeletal geometry and mass distribution.

A Meridian spokesperson declined to name the organ by its biological equivalent, citing intellectual property concerns, but confirmed that it occupies approximately 340 cubic centimeters of internal space that could have housed backup power cells or additional cooling capacity.

"The model converged faster when we included anatomically complete data. Removing structures that weren't directly relevant to motor control introduced instability in the training runs."

Technicians discovered the sealed component only after 12 units had already shipped to research institutions. Attempts to image the organ using X-ray and ultrasound have yielded unclear results, and Meridian's design documentation does not specify the material composition or internal structure. The company is now evaluating whether opening a unit to inspect the organ would void its warranty obligations to purchasers.

At press time, Meridian announced that future HM-8 models will incorporate two additional sealed cavities based on feedback from the current generation's training data, bringing the total non-functional internal volume to 890 cubic centimeters.
